2 Day Delphi & Meteora Tour Itinerary
-
Day 1: From Athens to Delphi & Overnight at Meteora
Begin your 2-day trip to Delphi & Meteora early in the morning with a pick up from the majority of the Athens city center hotels. Once you board inside your air-conditioned minibus, you will depart via the National highway to central Greece.
Departing from Attica, the landscape starts to change from dry to majestic and lush, passing through the area of Thebes, of Levadia, and finally Arachova, where you will make a brief stop.
Around noontime, you will arrive at one of the most important sights of ancient Greece, the enchanting Delphi, located on the spur of Mount Parnassus, between a pair of hills called the Fedriades. Dedicated to the god Apollo, the patron of music and sunlight, Delphi was considered the center of the ancient world. This is where the respected oracle of Delphi, the counselor of kings and pilgrims from all over the ancient world, took shelter.
Walk along the Sacred Way winding up to the temple of Apollo, decorated with innumerable offerings from almost all around the ancient world. Moreover, visit the theater with a capacity of 5,000 spectators that used to host plays, poetry readings, and festivals. At the nearby stadium, the Pythian Games were held every four years. Athletes from all over the Hellenic world would compete, and these games would become the predecessor to the modern Olympics.
After this fascinating guided tour, you will get back on the bus and travel further north. Cross the cities of Lamia and Trikala until you arrive at Kalambaka, a quiet town right next to Meteora, the region with colossal sandstone summits home to a complex of Orthodox monasteries. You will dine and spend the night in this charming town.

Day 2: From The Stunning Meteora Back to Athens
Next morning, enjoy a rich breakfast at your hotel before leaving by bus at the appointed time. Take in the breathtaking landscape of Meteora, a unique panorama made up of numerous sandstone summits. According to geologists, they formed under the sea thirty million years ago. More than any other place in Greece, Meteora is where natural beauty and spirituality converge most spectacularly.
You will have the opportunity to visit two of the monasteries built on the top of these greyish cliffs. There are six in use, five of which house monks and nuns. You usually visit Megalo Meteoro, meaning the superb Meteor, the first abbey established in Meteora by Athanasius after being expelled from Mount Athos to escape from his pursuers. Usually, the tour continues with St. Stephen’s Monastery, but other abbeys can substitute these.
After enjoying a guided tour of the two landmarks, you will head back to Athens. On our way, you will stop briefly at Thermopylae, where the Spartan King Leonidas I statue stands in honor of the famous battle against the Persians in 480 B.C.
The bus will be back in Athens at around 7 pm. After a fascinating 2-day trip to Delphi & Meteora, your tour ends back at the original departure point in Athens.
Dresscode in the monasteries: Sleeveless clothing and shorts over the knee for men are prohibited. Skirts and shawls are available at the entrance for ladies.
